South Korea (Part 6)
Autumn in South Korea is another good reason to go out in the country side with camera and all in hand and take in the beautiful display of the season’s colours. In fact exploring South Korea outside of Seoul is quite an experience and you will find that this country has a magnificent flora and fauna. Places like Deojeokdo Island, Busan, Jeju Island, Seongsan Sunrise Peak, Gongryong Ridge (Seorak Mountain), Jeungdo Salt Farm to name a few are well worth a visit.
On one occasion I was invited with a group of chefs to go to Sunchang County to promote Gochujang, a fermented chili paste that is very popular in South Korea and where Sunchang County is famous for. The chili paste is fantastic I must say. The fact that it is fermented makes it so special. It was during the annual Sunchang Sauce Festival in November and while we were exploring the village and its surroundings the autumn colours were in full display.
It was a fantastic experience to be in the country side of South Korea spending time with the locals and absorbing the local culture. During the festival there were many activities like making a 107 meter Meju, a fermented soybean block, the making of Doenjang, cooking competitions and selling of local specialties. People were having fun and everyone was enjoying themselves, just a perfect outing.
