“Two Towering Cardboard Boxes”
For those who live or have lived in Singapore you know what “Cardboard Boxes” I am referring to. I have lived in Singapore for four years and I remember in my first week there walking along Beach Road, just exploring the neighborhood, looking at these two identical buildings. And as I walked on I took my eyes of them and then looked at them again and suddenly I stopped walking. I stood still to take a closer look at what actually happened and was amused by it. I had a completely different view of the buildings then I did just a few seconds before. One of the buildings appeared as a flat sheet. It was as if someone had copied and pasted a life size image on a big screen. Or if someone was hanging a huge poster of a building frontage. The buildings I am referring to are the “Gateway East” and the “Gateway West” on Beach Road in Singapore. 37 storeys, 150 meters high these buildings were completed in April 1990. The buildings were designed by the U.S. based I. M. Pei. Read here more about these buildings. I think it is a cool and clever design. Below some images I took of these “Boxes”.
